TRAVEL NOTES

Some people have asked for information on travel itineraries and recommendations for lodging and attractions. I can only share my experiences and the notes from friends but here are my travel notes from places I have been and hope to visit. I will continue to update!

Hong Kong on the Cheap

So you want to enjoy Hong Kong without breaking the budget... I have a few tips for you.

Drinking
- the most popular drinking area are Lan Kwai Fong (LKF) and Soho (Mid-level Escalator) areas.
- first recommendation is to find happy hour deals. some start as early as 3 PM and go as late as 9 PM. There are also some ladies night (there were law suits around this recently).
- visit Club 7-11. a cheap way to drink in the popular areas are to go to 7-11 and buy drinks there and then hang outside the bars/clubs. Of course you won't get access to the facilities (dance floors and bathrooms) but it can be a more inexpensive way to enjoy the atmosphere.

Eating:
 - BOGO... Monday nights a bunch of restaurants have buy one, get one deal for mains. Check supermondays.com
 - visit local restaurants
 - dim sum is great. Tim Ho Wan and Din Tai Fong can be more expensive... check out more local places like Dim Dim Sum

Attractions:
- many museums have free admission on Wednesdays... check if it is still the case
- many local places are free to visit: Nan Lian Gardens, 10,000 Buddhas, templates (Man Mo, Wong Tai Sin), etc.
- markets are a great place to visit on the cheap (assuming you don't buy a lot). fun to visit wet markets especially
- hiking is always free
- PMQ is free to walk around and window shop local artisans, only gets expensive if you buy things!
- visit Hong Kong Botanical Gardens. There are monkeys, animals and an aviary. All free to visit.
- light show at 8 PM every night over the harbour is free
- don't spend money on expensive boat tour of the harbour, spend the 2-3 HKD and take the Star Ferry
- visit the island Cheng Chau, Lamma, etc.
- go to the beach
