TRAVEL NOTES

Some people have asked for information on travel itineraries and recommendations for lodging and attractions. I can only share my experiences and the notes from friends but here are my travel notes from places I have been and hope to visit. I will continue to update!

Greece Travel Notes

My friends and I went to Greece in 2013.

We used a Greek travel agent to handle everything in Greece and wow am I glad we did that. They did all hotels and all transfers (ferries and cars) to get us where we wanted to go. It was so nice to not worry at all about any transfers. They purchased all the tickets for ferries as well and gave to us. It meant the trip wasn't flexible but made it so easy that we didn't have to think. The arrangement was great because even at the port we didn't have to hunt to figure out which ferry to get on. They literally dropped us off next to the correct boat. The customer service was amazing and we were taken care of the whole time. We had a contact number of an agency employee in every location in case we needed help.

I did price check the package against if I tried to book the same thing online myself and it ended up being extremely competitive. So it was a no-brainer to use the agent.

We did book the international flights from US to Athens on our own since we could get better pricing than Fantasy. Once we gave them the international flight schedule, they arranged the rest.

The website has some suggested packages and plans that you can choose from but you can obviously customize it. We ended up changing one of the hotels after I checked online reviews and it wasn't highly recommended.

For our trip, we started in Athens and then went to the islands of Mykonos and Santorini. We picked these islands because they were relatively close for us to go in between. Some Greek islands are 8+ hours away by boat or you have to take a domestic flight.

Day 1: Arrive in Athens in morning

Walk around Athens to see Parthenon and Acropolis.
Spend night in Athens

Athens is good for the historical sight-seeing. Definitely take the time to walk up to Parthenon. The view is worth the walk. Grab a map and walk around the city to see all the ruins. I think 1-2 days here is good for sight seeing. We found a place that had the fish pedicures and we stuck our feet in fish tanks for a while.

Day 2: To Mykonos
Morning transfer arranged by Fantasy from hotel to port for ferry ride to Mykonos (about 4.5 hours).

3 nights in Mykonos
Mykonos is a party city. We stayed within walking distance of the town. It is such a cool place with little winding walking streets with shops and restaurants. There is a big party scene here. The beach near our hotel wasn't the best for laying out although people did. We spent more time at the pool at our hotel and visiting the town. We didn't plan many attractions or activities before, we just grabbed a map and walked around. We did eat at restaurants in the town. Our vacation was very low key so we actually bought a bottle at a liquor store and sat on the balcony of our hotel room at night just relaxing.

The food was so good. I still remember the baked brie at the hotel which I dream about.

One option was for us to rent motorbikes or a car to go to the other side of the island to a better beach. We decided against it for our trip.

Day 5: To Santorini
Transfer arranged by Fantasy from hotel to port and fast boat to Santorini (about 2.5 hours)
Transfer arranged from Santorini port to hotel

Santorini is a much quieter island and is more romantic. Gorgeous island. We did spend some of our time at the hotel around the pool. One day we did venture by bus to the black sand beach. The hotel told us how to take the bus and through some mixed communication we made our way to the beach. Chairs and umbrellas do cost money to use on the beach. But walking on the black sand and swimming in the Aegean Sea was totally worth it.

We also took the hotel shuttle to the town on Santorini. It was not as nice as Mykonos town but still quaint. We did a bit of shopping. Most of our meals we ate at the hotel.

Day 8: Return Home  :(
Transfer arranged by Fantasy from hotel to airport for morning domestic flight back to Athens. Fantasy arranged the domestic flight for us.
The hotels on Mykonos and Santorini were great. They took very good care of us especially using the local agent who had relationships with them. Some of our transfers included other people and we met someone who actually worked for the agency and we ended up seeing them many times over our trip.

Loved Greece. Would definitely recommend.
