TRAVEL NOTES

Some people have asked for information on travel itineraries and recommendations for lodging and attractions. I can only share my experiences and the notes from friends but here are my travel notes from places I have been and hope to visit. I will continue to update!

Hong Kong Living Here Notes

This is part of my larger notes about Hong Kong. Some people have come to live here for 10 weeks to 2 years+ so I have put together more info for those people who are here as more than tourists.

PART 3 – WHAT IF YOU LIVE HERE

GROCERY STORES

Wet Markets
These are the street markets or indoor markets that sell produce, meat and fish. You can find good places with fresh produce. Depends on your comfort level with buying food on the street.

Wellcome
Low cost. Good for pre-packaged foods and has more local foods. Good to buy water, paper goods, etc. Produce can be so-so depending on the branch.

Park N Shop / Fusion
Medium Price. Has local and western foods.

Marks & Spencer
Medium Priced, UK foods. Pre-packaged salads and foods.

City Super / Olivers
Higher priced but good for those western foods you want. Organic foods. Western cereals.

A&M Grocery
Has western foods but is more for bulk sized items. Have to buy a lot.

SOHO CHEAP FOOD

Nood. At Pure.
Good salads there. Small salad if decent meal for HKD 65.

Wellcome Sushi.
On Caine Road, the Wellcome is the hub for sushi. The sushi there is inexpensive and good.

Chicken on the Run
Pick up a rotisserie chicken with sides.

FOOD DELIVERY
·         Food Panda
·         UberEats
·         Deliveroo

YOU MISS TARGET?

Japan Home Center (JHC) – the most Target like place with variety of things. Still very small.

There are specialized stores for electrical things, key making, stationary, organic food, etc. Don’t hesitate to ask people where these stores area.

APPS

CitybusNWFB – main bus company. If you allow it to use GPS, the bus on screen moves along as you travel.

MTR Mobile – best app for MTR lines and exit info

KMB & LW - use this one less than first two

HKeTransport – do not use this often but it does have the green mini bus schedules.

HK Observatory – local weather and weather warnings, best to let it send you alerts since it will tell you when there are rain and typhoon warning.

OpenRice – this is the Yelp of Hong Kong to find restaurants and look at reviews.

FoodPanda & Deliveroo – food delivery

GovHK Notify

Units Plus – helps to convert currencies, temperatures, etc

Google Translate – you can actually take a picture now and use it to translate the words. Decent translations.

Taxi Cards – these can be a life saver if the taxi driver doesn’t know particular location in English. Type in where you want to go and it has a digital card with Chinese characters so you can show the driver.

Enjoy Hiking – app is okay for finding hikes. There are also 2 books we use to identify hikes.

HK Movie & AMC – 2 apps for finding movies. You can actually purchase actual seats for movies ahead of time.
